About this course
In this 4 week hands-on course, we will openly explore the art and science of smell in order to realize its creative potential.
Scent is the most emotional of our senses. It can move us in ways that capture our attention, evoke powerful memories, and transport us across space and time. Despite its transformative power, scent is also the least understood of the senses and is a relatively unexplored frontier for personal vitality, creativity, and artistic expression.
In this hands-on course, we will openly explore the art and science of smell in order to realize its creative potential. We will also learn the basics of blending your own scents including: how to choose aromatic materials, how to smell and work with the materials, and how to translate your inspiration into a unique scent formula. You will leave the course with a good foundational understanding of scent, and your very own creations to prove it.
PARTICIPANTS & OUTCOMES
This introductory course is designed for:
Anyone interested in how scent can enrich their daily experiences
Makers and hobbyists interested in creating their own custom scents
Creatives interested in incorporating scent into their artistic practice
After this course, participants will be able to:
Explain the close relationship between smell, emotion, and memory
Compare and describe the aesthetic properties of various scents
Confidently work with different types of natural aromatic materials
Understand the basic three-layer-structure that defines both scentscapes and perfumes
Translate your inspiration or creative concept into a hand-blended scent formula
Absolutely no prior experience with scent is required. All materials will be provided. Finished scents can take the form of oils for diffusers or for adding to candles, oil-based roll on perfumes, or other creative formats of your choice.
ABOUT WAYFINDING ACADEMY LABS

Labs are 12-hour public workshops taught by expert faculty and designed to dive into a specific subject or skillset in a small group setting. Labs typically take place over the course of a weekend or series of weeknights, and are open to both enrolled Wayfinding students and members of the wider community for a rich mix of perspectives.
LABS PRICING POLICY
We strive to make our Labs as accessible as possible. That’s why we offer a sliding-scale fee for community members. Our sliding scale is broken into three tiers as follows and all fees are split 50/50 with our instructors.
Lower Tier - $90 ($7.50 per hour of instruction)
Middle Tier - $120 ($10 per hour of instruction)
Higher Tier - $180 ($15 per hour of instruction)
