Introduction to Scent Design

  • Hatch Innovation Lab 2420 Northeast Sandy Boulevard Portland, OR, 97232 United States (map)

Event Description

Whether you're new to scent or just curious about its potential, this workshop will provide you an introduction to the history, theories, applications, and opportunities of scent design. You will also learn the basics of creating your own scents, including how to choose aromatic materials (natural vs. synthetic vs. isolates), how to smell and work with the materials, and how to translate your inspiration or creative concept into a scent formula.

You will leave the workshop with a good foundational understanding of scent design, and your very own blended scent to prove it.

The workshop lasts two hours and includes:

  • An introductory presentation: Learn the history and principles of scent design

  • Guided exploration: Smell a curated collection of familiar and unique aromatic materials and compare their aesthetic properties

  • Hands-on creation: Blend your own custom scent based on an artistic concept using all natural materials

This workshop takes place at HatchLab PDX, located at 2420 NE Sandy Blvd. in Portland, Oregon. No prior scent experience is necessary. All materials are included.

Who should attend?

This introductory workshop is designed for:

  • Makers and hobbyists interested in creating their own custom scents

  • Creative professionals interested in concepting and designing scented products or experiences

  • Artists interested in incorporating scent into their art practice
