Event Description
Whether you're new to scent or just curious about its potential, this workshop will provide you an introduction to the history, theories, applications, and opportunities of scent design. You will also learn the basics of creating your own scents, including how to choose aromatic materials (natural vs. synthetic vs. isolates), how to smell and work with the materials, and how to translate your inspiration or creative concept into a scent formula.
You will leave the workshop with a good foundational understanding of scent design, and your very own blended scent to prove it.
The workshop lasts two hours and includes:
An introductory presentation: Learn the history and principles of scent design
Guided exploration: Smell a curated collection of familiar and unique aromatic materials and compare their aesthetic properties
Hands-on creation: Blend your own custom scent based on an artistic concept using all natural materials
This workshop takes place at HatchLab PDX, located at 2420 NE Sandy Blvd. in Portland, Oregon. No prior scent experience is necessary. All materials are included.

About the Instructor
Angela Espersen is a creative professional, educator, and artist who is passionate about encouraging experimentation and making scent accessible to everyone. She began her career in fine art, graduating from Oregon State University with a BFA in Applied Visual Arts. She has spent the past 3 years experimenting with scent as an artistic medium and honing her scent practice, including the chance to study under legendary natural perfumer Mandy Aftel. In addition to her personal scent practice, she has facilitated scent-based workshops and experiences with clients such as adidas and Portland State University.
